The Turtle Guarantees, Compared

Which Waikiki turtle snorkels promise a free return, a re-ride or a refund if you see no turtle, what each promise covers, and the boats that promise nothing.

Updated November 2026

Most Waikiki turtle boats promise you something if the turtles do not show, but the promise is rarely money. Oahu Catamarans gives a full refund. The rest that offer anything give you another trip: free on the same boat, within 12 months on Living Ocean Tours, or on any trip of the same or lesser value on Hawaii Nautical. A few boats promise nothing at all. A free trip is worth most if you book early in your stay, so there is time to use it. For a guide in the water and the next trip free, Hawaii Ocean Charters’ small group from Kewalo Basin costs from $85 a person (checked November 2026).

Refund, free trip or re-ride: what the difference means

  • A refund is the only promise that is worth the same on your last day as on your first. Oahu Catamarans is the one boat here that offers it.
  • A free return trip is worth a whole second morning, if you have one. Book the turtle snorkel early in your stay and you keep the chance to use it.
  • Who has to see the turtle: Living Ocean Tours and Island Splash Tours tie the promise to the snorkel group seeing a turtle during the in-water part of the trip.
  • A re-ride of the same or lesser value on Hawaii Nautical can be a different trip, on another island, so long as it costs no more.

Why no one can promise the turtle itself

Green sea turtles are wild, and the reef the boats call Turtle Canyon has no official description: no state or federal agency publishes a count of the turtles there or how often they are seen. What the boats sell is their own experience of the reef and a commercial promise if it fails. Adult turtles come up to breathe every 15 to 30 minutes, which is when snorkelers at the surface see them rise past.

Prices, ratings and review counts from the listings (GetYourGuide checked November 2026; Viator checked November 2026). Operators price by date and season, so treat the figures as the shape of the market, not a quote.

Whichever you book, the turtle rules still apply: watch from 10 feet (3 meters) away, never touch, chase or feed a turtle, and if one swims toward you, stay still and let it pass. See where each boat leaves from before you choose.
