Snorkeling with Turtles When You Can't Swim Well

Can non-swimmers snorkel with turtles in Waikiki? Boats with life jackets, flotation boards and crew help, the ones that ask you to swim, and safety.

Updated November 2026

Yes, you can snorkel with turtles off Waikiki without being a strong swimmer, on the right boat. Oceanstar gives flotation gear and help in the water to beginners, children and anyone who is not a confident swimmer; Blue Ocean Snorkeling puts less confident swimmers in life jackets with a crew member and a flotation board; Charter Oahu has a swim step where a non-swimmer can sit with their feet in the water. Other boats ask for basic swimming ability, and a few want you to swim on your own. The easiest start is Oceanstar’s trip with hotel pickup and a lifeguard on board, from $107 in current promotion (usually $120) a person (checked November 2026).

If you cannot swim at all

Pick a boat where staying out of the deep water is part of the plan. On Charter Oahu you can sit on the swim step with your feet in the water and watch for turtles rising to breathe. On Hawaii Apex Charters you can stay on the boat while the others swim the last 10 to 20 yards with the guide. Green turtles surface every 15 to 30 minutes to breathe, so from the deck or the swim step you may still see one.

Before your first snorkel, turtle-canyon-snorkel.com walks through fitting the mask, breathing through the snorkel and the first minutes in the water at Turtle Canyon.

Stay safe in the water

Snorkeling is the activity most often involved in ocean drownings in Hawaii, and most of the snorkelers who drowned were not Hawaii residents. On the stretch of shore from the Hilton Hawaiian Village to Kapahulu, 50 people drowned between 2009 and 2018, 41 of them not Hawaii residents, and 42 of them between April and September, according to Hawaii’s health department. Heart disease was a contributing factor in about a third of all ocean drownings in its data.

  • Take the flotation the crew offers, even if you swim, and keep it on.
  • Stay with the guide, and never snorkel alone.
  • Tell the crew about any heart or breathing condition before you get in; several boats list poor cardiovascular health as a reason not to go.
  • Leave the turtles their room: at least 10 feet (3 meters), never touching, chasing or feeding them. If one swims toward you, stay still and let it pass.
