Snorkeling with Turtles in Waikiki with Kids

The youngest age each Waikiki turtle snorkel takes, boats with life jackets for everyone, infants on board, and keeping children and turtles safe.

Updated November 2026

Children can snorkel with turtles off Waikiki, but the youngest age changes from boat to boat. Hawaii Nautical’s lunch catamaran from the Hilton pier is family friendly for all ages, with life jackets for everyone; Living Ocean Tours takes children from 3; Island Splash Tours from 5; Captain Max from 5; Pink Sails and Hawaii Ocean Charters from 7. With small children, the simplest morning is Oceanstar’s trip with hotel pickup: the crew helps children in the water, a certified lifeguard is on board, and after the turtles there are kayaks and floating sea chairs. It costs from $107 in current promotion (usually $120) a person (checked November 2026).

Which boat for which child

  • Babies and toddlers who will stay on deck: Hawaii Nautical’s catamaran has room, shade, restrooms and lunch, and life jackets for everyone; Blue Ocean lets under-2s ride along but not swim.
  • Children of 3 to 6: Living Ocean Tours takes them from 3 with guides in the water; Island Splash and Captain Max from 5. A life jacket or flotation vest is part of the gear on all of them.
  • Children of 7 and up who can swim: every boat on this page is open to them, including the small groups of Hawaii Ocean Charters and Pink Sails.

Keeping a child safe, and the turtle too

  • Life vest on, the whole time in the water, and an adult within reach.
  • Teach the 10-foot rule before you go. NOAA and the state recommend staying at least 10 feet (3 meters) from a turtle. Touching or feeding a turtle in any way is a disturbance and illegal in Hawaii.
  • If a turtle swims toward you, hold still together and let it pass.
  • Use a rash guard and less sunscreen. Hawaii has banned the sale of sunscreens with oxybenzone or octinoxate since 2021.
